This winter, SKILOCAL!
Our Story
SKILOCAL in your communities
Southwest Edmonton is very lucky for many reasons. One in particular is the extensive green spaces that surround our neighbourhoods and run along our utility corridors. These green spaces become white spaces in the winter.
In 2014, Ski2LRT launched as an emergent movement that attempted to shift mindsets around three concepts: winter, cross-country skiing in urban settings and LRT usage.
A simple Facebook page was designed, and with the help of the South West Area Council, a cross-country ski rack was placed at the Century Park LRT station.
What happened next, and the unintended ripple effects, went beyond the original intention. It was unknown that neighborhood ski enthusiasts felt isolated, with a need to drive at least 20 minutes to access groomed ski trails.
Unintentionally, the Ski2LRT initiative connected a community and gave like-minded individuals a space to convene.
In 2016, Ski2LRT became SkiLocal, and expanded to provide XC ski opportunities in SW neighbourhoods.
Today, we are a group of Edmontonians interested in cross-country-skiing right in and around our neighbourhoods. We are working with Community Leagues and the city to make it possible to have quality groomed trails.
We have a strong partnership with the South West Area Council and are able to groom trails in neighbourhoods west of Calgary Trail and South of Whitemud Drive.
